Tips to Prevent Neck Injuries
1. Avoid activities that put stress on your neck.
Certain activities compromise your neck and make it more vulnerable to injury. Examples of activities you should avoid include holding your head in a forward posture, resting your forehead on your arm and overuse of your upper body or arms.
2. Limit activities that put you at a higher risk of injury.
Some activities may increase the risk of injury to your neck by putting you in situations where your neck is vulnerable. Examples of activities that are risky for your neck include high-impact sports and activities in which falls are likely.
3. Build strength in your neck.
If your neck is strong, injuries are less likely. Toned neck muscles will not strain or sprain as easily, and a strong neck will be more stable in the event of an impact to the head or whiplash in a car accident. You can build strength in your neck by performing safe strengthening exercises on a regular basis.
4. Rest when you need it.
If your neck is feeling strained or sore, think about your recent activities and limit any that may be putting too much stress on your neck until your symptoms subside.
5. Learn to manage stress.
When you are feeling stressed or upset, you are more likely to clench the muscles in your neck, making it more vulnerable to injury. Finding ways to relieve stress will protect your neck and other muscles. Some of the best stress-relieving activities include yoga, meditation, spending time in nature, participating in a hobby and spending time with friends and family.
6. Seek treatment for symptoms that don't go away.
If you begin experiencing neck pain or stiffness and you can't eliminate these symptoms on your own, seek professional treatment. Ignoring these symptoms will only raise the risk of a more serious neck injury.
